STATEMENT: Auchincloss: “Members Need To Put Their Country Before Their Primary Base”

Washington, D.C. - The below statement regarding  the Fiscal Responsibility Act. can be attributed to Congressman Jake Auchincloss (D,MA-04):

“January 6th, 2021 was Xi Jinping’s best day in office. Trump’s failed insurrection lent credence to the Chinese Communist Party’s message of an America in decline and dysfunction. Under President Biden’s leadership, much of that damage has been repaired. The United States is investing in its economy at home and defending democracy overseas.

“This week, we are tested again. A debt default would be catastrophic, wiping out jobs and crushing retirement accounts. And it would be yet another public relations bonanza for the CCP, critically undermining U.S. geo-economic power and persuasion. Congress must raise the debt limit.

“Like many Members, I dislike the GOP hypocrisy and brinkmanship that drove negotiations, and I disagree with elements of the deal. But governing requires compromise, not absolutism. Litmus tests that perform well on social media and cable news do not translate well to the halls of Congress. When the full faith and credit of the United States is on the line, and our adversaries are watching for weakness, Members need to put their country before their primary base.

“I will be voting yes on the Fiscal Responsibility Act. I encourage my colleagues, some of whom may be planning to vote No, but hope Yes, to join me.”
